100% a destination ride that must be done while in Colorado but make no mistake, with the 30 mph speed limit and consistent stream of visitors you won't be breaking any speed records getting to the top. Add to that the briefing you get at the entry gate about "absolutely no passing" and it seals your fate, just sit tight and enjoy the views even if you are being 15 cars going 30 mph.
This is most definitely an intermediate route because of the extreme shelf roads (drop offs) that switchback up to the top. I would absolutely not bring a beginner rider up on this section of road, for their own safety.
1. Pikes Peak
Pikes Peak is the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The ultra-prominent 14,115-foot (4,302.31 m) fourteener is located in Pike National Forest, 12 miles (19 km) west of downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. The town of Manitou Springs lies at its base.
The mountain is named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike (though he was unable to reach the summit). The summit is higher than any point in the United States east of its longitude.
